When you breathe, your lungs take in oxygen from the air and deliver it to the bloodstream. The cells in your body need oxygen to work and grow. During a normal day, you breathe nearly 25,000 times. People with lung disease have difficulty breathing. Throughout the world millions of people are affected by lung disease.

The term “lung disease” refers to many acute and chronic disorders affecting the lungs.  These include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, infections (influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis), bronchiolitis, smoking-related lung disease, vaping-induced lung disease, lung cancer, and breathing problems such as sleep apnoea (a condition where the body forgets to breathe whilst you are asleep which results in tiredness and lethargy).

Respiratory medicine is the area of health care that specifically deals with disorders of the lungs. At the Specialist Medical Clinic, one of our physicians Dr Waqar Haider has a special interest in respiratory medicine.  Within the clinic he provides a dedicated respiratory healthcare service, including sleep studies for people with possible sleep apnoea.

If you are concerned about your lungs or think you may have a breathing disorders, contact the clinic for an appointment.
